Elizabeth Dankert, Boston Harbor: A 24-Year-Old Star Athlete’s Night Out Ends in Tragedy on the Rocks

It was supposed to be just another night out on the water. Instead, a late-night boat ride in Boston Harbor turned into something nobody who knew Elizabeth Dankert will ever be able to forget. The 24-year-old Andover woman — a former college soccer player with a bright future ahead of her — was killed early Tuesday morning when a recreational boat slammed into Pier 4R near Logan Airport, sending all four passengers flying onto jagged rocks along the shoreline. She was pronounced dead right there at the scene.

Boston EMS units rushed to the water in the middle of the night, working through darkness and slick, dangerous rocks just to get to where the crash had happened. It wasn’t easy. The conditions were brutal — the kind of rescue scene that tests even the most seasoned first responders. But they showed up, and they worked fast. Three other people who were on that boat with Elizabeth survived and were rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital. Two of them were 23-year-old women. The third was the 40-year-old man who owned the boat.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden confirmed that the vessel struck Pier 4R at around 11:20 p.m., throwing everyone on board onto the rocky shoreline of Boston Harbor. Investigators are still piecing together exactly what happened — what caused the boat to hit the pier the way it did, and why. The case is still very much open and active, and authorities are making it clear that every angle of this tragedy is being looked at closely.

Officials didn’t hold back when it came to expressing their grief. They publicly extended their deepest sympathies to Elizabeth’s family and friends, and made a point to recognize the first responders who put themselves out there in incredibly tough conditions to do their jobs. It was a rough night for everyone involved, and the people who ran toward that scene deserve every bit of credit they’re getting.

But here’s the thing about Elizabeth Dankert — she wasn’t just a name in a report. She was somebody. At Union College, she was a standout on the soccer field and a serious student in the classroom. She earned CSC Academic All-District honors in 2022 and landed on the Liberty League All-Academic Team two years in a row, in 2021 and 2022. She didn’t just show up to play — she showed up to excel, every single time.

Off the field, she was just as impressive. Elizabeth worked as a peer editor at Union’s Writing Center and was a proud member of the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society. Before all of that, back at Central Catholic High School, she was a four-year varsity athlete in both soccer and track. She earned First Team All-Conference honors in 2018 and 2019, was named a Lawrence Tribune Girls Soccer All-Star, and was part of the National Honor Society. She was the kind of kid that made everyone around her want to do better.

The Andover community is devastated. People who knew Elizabeth — her teammates, her classmates, her neighbors — are all trying to make sense of something that just doesn’t make sense. A life that full, that driven, that promising, gone in an instant on a quiet night on the harbor. Elizabeth Dankert was only 24 years old, and she had already done more than most people twice her age. The water took her too soon, and Massachusetts is going to feel that loss for a long time.
