A quiet evening in Toombs County turned tragic on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, after a yard accident claimed the life of 2-year-old Zakai Johnson outside a home on Cadillac Drive.
The incident happened around 5:55 p.m. when emergency dispatch received a call from Memorial Health Meadows Hospital. A young child had been rushed in with severe injuries and was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say Zakai Johnson was struck in the yard by a silver GMC Yukon. The vehicle was being driven by Edward Wright at the time of the incident.
The child’s mother, 21-year-old Shanora Johnson, quickly transported him to the hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite urgent medical efforts, the child did not survive.
The Vidalia Police Department initially responded to the hospital but later determined the incident occurred outside city limits at 2704 Cadillac Drive. The case was then handed over to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to both the hospital and the scene as investigators began gathering evidence. Because of the severity of the case, the Georgia State Patrol and its Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team were brought in to assist.
Officials have stated that early findings suggest the crash may have been accidental, though the investigation is still ongoing as authorities work to fully understand what happened.
The community now faces a painful loss, mourning a child whose life ended far too soon and leaving family members with deep and lasting grief.
