Buffalo Grove Orlando Rivas is being remembered as a quiet hero after a tragic accident outside Buffalo Grove High School turned a normal dismissal into heartbreak. The 52-year-old security guard died after what officials say was a sudden and violent chain of events in the school parking area.
It happened on Tuesday afternoon as students were leaving for the day. Rivas was on duty, helping students cross safely near Dundee Road. That was his usual role, keeping order and making sure no child got hurt in the rush of dismissal.

According to reports, a car tried to exit the school parking lot and struck a pole. The impact caused the pole to collapse. It fell directly toward the area where Rivas was standing. Witnesses and community accounts say he moved in a way that helped shield students nearby.
He suffered a severe brain injury in the incident. Emergency crews rushed him to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. He was listed in critical condition as doctors worked to stabilize him.
Despite medical efforts, Rivas died on Friday from his injuries. Officials confirmed his passing, and the news quickly spread through the school community, leaving students, parents, and staff in shock.
He leaves behind his wife Erin and four children, ranging in age from 4 to 30. Family friends and school supporters launched a GoFundMe campaign to help support them, and it has already raised over $130,000 as of Saturday.
Those who worked with him describe Rivas as steady, kind, and deeply committed to protecting students. The fundraiser calls him someone who consistently put others first, not just on that day but throughout his life.
A vigil has been planned at the school’s turf field. Community members are expected to gather to honor him, share memories, and show support for the family he leaves behind.
