The quiet early hours of Monday morning turned tragic on Interstate 37 when a young driver lost his life in a violent crash just south of downtown San Antonio. Authorities say 21-year-old Mathew Xavier Galvan was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Corvette when the accident unfolded shortly after 2 a.m.
Police responded to the scene in the southbound lanes of I-37 near Carolina Street. According to investigators, the Corvette suddenly veered out of control. The sports car smashed through a guardrail and slid down a steep hill before reaching the access road below.

The vehicle eventually slammed into another guardrail where it came to a stop. The damage was severe, and emergency crews quickly realized the situation was critical. Galvan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials with the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed his identity. For those who arrived at the crash site, the wreckage told the story of a high-impact crash that happened in a matter of seconds.
A 23-year-old woman who was riding in the Corvette survived the crash. Authorities said she suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by emergency crews. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
The crash temporarily shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 37 while officers worked the scene and investigators documented evidence. The closure caused early morning traffic delays, though the lanes were later reopened once the investigation wrapped up.
Police say it is still unclear what caused Galvan to lose control of the Corvette. Detectives are continuing to review the crash, hoping to determine what happened in the moments before the car left the highway.
For now, a young life has been lost and a quiet stretch of interstate near downtown San Antonio carries the weight of another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a routine drive can turn deadly.
