TRENTON, Ohio — Neighbors still speak quietly about the laughter that once spilled out of the home on West Aberdeen Drive, now silenced after a devastating fire claimed the life of 45-year-old Casey Lykins this week. Lykins, a mother of three, died from smoke inhalation after her house erupted in flames around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, authorities said.
Fire crews from the Trenton Fire Department were among the first on the scene at 712 West Aberdeen Drive, battling heavy smoke that poured from the windows and roof as neighbors watched in horror. Upon entering, firefighters rescued a dog from the thick haze and then climbed to the second floor where they found Lykins unresponsive amid the blaze.
Paramedics on the ground worked to stabilize her with advanced life support before she was rushed aboard a UC AirCare helicopter, a quick bid to save her life. Despite those efforts, Lykins was pronounced dead shortly after departure. Her cause of death was confirmed as smoke inhalation by the Butler County Coroner’s Office, and investigators are still working to determine what sparked the fire.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries in the rescue attempt and were treated at the scene, fire officials confirmed. State and county fire investigators, including the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office, have taken over the probe into what started the blaze.
Friends and neighbors described Lykins as someone with a big heart who was often seen outside playing with her children or helping others. “She’s just very happy usually,” a neighbor said, recalling how she was a familiar and joyful presence in the community.
In the days since her passing, family and friends gathered for a vigil to honor Lykins’ life, sharing memories of her love of the outdoors and her gentle nature with kids and adults alike. A fundraiser has also been set up to help the family with funeral costs and support the children during this difficult time.
This tragedy has left the Trenton community shaken, but also closer, as residents remember a neighbor who was always ready with a smile or a helping hand — and now, a story that will linger in their hearts for years to come.
