Memphis — A tense argument at Centennial Gardens Apartments in southeast Memphis turned fatal Monday evening when a domestic dispute ended with gunfire and the death of 32-year-old Leah Carnes. Around 6:15 p.m., neighbors heard raised voices and then shots in the parking area of the complex on Capital Peak Lane East.
Authorities quickly detained 33-year-old Jasmine Schreane at the scene. According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Schreane has been booked on multiple serious charges linked to the incident, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and felony vandalism. As of the latest reports, no bond has been set for her release.

Carnes was shot during the confrontation and transported by a man present to Methodist Germantown hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The sudden loss has rippled through families and the apartment community, leaving many struggling to process the abrupt violence.
Investigators are continuing to question witnesses and gather evidence in what Sheriff’s deputies describe as an ongoing homicide investigation. Detectives encouraged anyone with details about the shooting to share what they know with authorities to help clarify exactly what happened.
Schreane’s arrest has become a focal point for discussions about conflict and consequences in the neighborhood. Friends of Carnes spoke of her kindness, while others lamented the tragedy of two lives entangled in a dispute that ended in loss and legal peril.
The sheriff’s office reiterated that the investigation remains active, with more developments expected as detectives follow up on leads. Carnes’s death adds to a broader sense of unease in the area as residents grapple with the impact of gun violence on their community.
