Centennial Gardens, Memphis Woman Killed in Apartment Parking Lot Fight

Memphis — Leah Carnes, 32, was found lifeless after a violent confrontation Monday evening in the parking lot of Centennial Gardens Apartments in southeast Shelby County. What began as a heated argument between Carnes and another woman turned into gunfire shortly before 6:15 p.m. as shadows lengthened across the pavement. A man at the scene rushed Carnes to Methodist Germantown hospital, but she was pronounced dead soon after arrival.

Law enforcement arrested 33-year-old Jasmine Schreane at the scene. Deputies say Schreane is now facing charges that include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and felony vandalism for her alleged role in the deadly dispute. As of Tuesday, she remained in the Shelby County Jail without bond set.

Investigators described the shooting as erupting from an apparent domestic dispute that drew neighbors to their windows and brought sirens echoing through the otherwise quiet complex. Detectives scoured the scene Tuesday, looking for evidence and talking with people who might have seen what led to the fatal exchange.

Family and friends of Carnes gathered at her home Tuesday night, their voices low and grief palpable. Those who knew her described Carnes as someone warm and full of life, taken too soon in a cascade of gun violence that has left the community searching for answers.

Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to piece together exactly how the encounter escalated. Law enforcement officials urged anyone with information to reach out with any details that could help with the investigation.

Carnes’s death stands as the latest in a troubling pattern of shootings in the area, deepening concerns among residents about safety and conflict resolution. As the community mourns, many are calling for a moment of reflection on how disputes can be resolved without violence.
