COLUMBIA COUNTY Lorenza Gaspar-Mateo Seriously Hurt in Fatal Highway 30 Crash

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ore. — A split-second mistake on Highway 30 Monday evening changed multiple lives, leaving one woman dead and another driver fighting serious injuries. Oregon State Police say 34-year-old Lorenza Gaspar-Mateo of Longview, Washington, was behind the wheel when the deadly crash unfolded near milepost 51.

The collision happened around 6:54 p.m. as Gaspar-Mateo drove a Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound on Highway 30. Investigators say the SUV crossed into the westbound lane, where it slammed head-on into a Subaru Crosstrek driven by 23-year-old Alissa Jenay Jarvis of Astoria.

Jarvis was pronounced dead at the scene, her life ending on the roadway before she could be transported for help. The force of the crash left both vehicles heavily damaged and scattered debris across the highway.

Gaspar-Mateo survived the impact but suffered serious injuries. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where her condition was described as severe. Troopers say impairment and lane safety played key roles in the crash.

The highway remained closed for about five hours as first responders and investigators worked through the aftermath. Drivers were forced to find alternate routes while emergency lights filled the darkened stretch of road.

Oregon State Police led the investigation with help from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Columbia River Fire, and the Oregon Department of Transportation. Crews focused on clearing the scene and documenting evidence before reopening the highway.

As the investigation continues, the crash has left deep scars on two communities. One family is mourning the loss of a daughter, while another faces the weight of survival after a devastating mistake on a familiar Oregon highway.
