ALSIP, Ill. — A quiet stretch of water turned into the center of heartbreak Tuesday afternoon, after 19-year-old Tabarak Al Najjar was found in the Cal Sag Channel, leaving a community searching for answers and a family facing an unimaginable loss.
It was around 4:30 p.m. when emergency crews rushed toward the area near 131st Street. Calls had come in about someone in the water. Firefighters and police officers arrived quickly, moving with urgency as they scanned the channel and began immediate rescue efforts.

They soon located a young woman in the water. First responders worked fast, pulling her out and doing everything they could right there at the scene. There was still hope in those first moments. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, with crews continuing lifesaving measures along the way.
But despite those efforts, the outcome turned tragic. Doctors later pronounced her dead, bringing a sudden and devastating end to a situation that had unfolded in a matter of minutes.
Authorities later identified her as Tabarak Al Najjar, a 19-year-old from Crestwood. For many, the name now carries a weight far beyond the brief official statement. She was young, just starting out, and her death has left a silence that’s hard to ignore.
Right now, there are still more questions than answers. Officials have not said how she ended up in the water. They have also not confirmed whether foul play is suspected, leaving the circumstances surrounding her death unclear.
Investigators are continuing their work, carefully piecing together what happened in those critical moments before she was found. Until then, the focus remains on understanding how a life so young could be lost so suddenly in a place that, just hours earlier, seemed ordinary.
