A late-night drive on Interstate 71 ended in tragedy for 31-year-old Christina M. Rivera of Cleveland after her SUV crashed into a construction vehicle that was stationed inside a highway work zone.
According to authorities, the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on June 4 in the southbound lanes of I-71 near Bagley Road. Rivera was driving a black 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class when her vehicle struck a 2017 International work truck that had been stopped in the far-right lane.
Investigators said the truck was not moving at the time of the collision. It had been positioned specifically to protect a road crew that was painting pavement markings inside the construction zone. Troopers said the vehicle’s flashing yellow warning lights were activated when the crash occurred.
Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene and transported Rivera to Southwest General Hospital. Despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries.
Authorities confirmed Rivera was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the construction truck, whose name has not been released, was also taken to Southwest General Hospital with minor injuries.
Officials said none of the workers who were performing road work in the area were injured. The truck absorbed the impact while serving as a protective barrier for the crew.
The crash forced the closure of southbound I-71 for about two hours overnight as investigators documented the scene and cleanup crews removed damaged vehicles from the roadway. Traffic was diverted while troopers worked to determine exactly what happened.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision. As of now, officials have not announced whether speed, impairment, distraction, or any other factors contributed to the deadly crash. For Rivera’s family and loved ones, however, the loss is already painfully clear as they mourn a life that ended far too soon on a stretch of highway that turned tragic in an instant.
