The Denali National Park community is mourning the loss of Robin Pendery, a seasonal mountaineering ranger whose dedication to climber safety ended in tragedy on one of the most challenging mountains in the world.
Pendery, of Enumclaw, Washington, died Thursday after falling into a crevasse while serving on a climbing patrol on Mount McKinley, also known as Denali. The accident happened around 2 p.m. near the mountain’s well-known 14,000-foot camp, a major staging area along the popular West Buttress climbing route.
According to park officials, fellow rangers and rescue personnel rushed to the scene immediately after the fall. Despite those efforts, Pendery could not be saved.
Pendery joined the Denali mountaineering staff in 2024 and quickly became a valued member of the team. Her work focused on climber safety, emergency response operations, and helping visitors navigate the risks that come with attempting North America’s tallest peak.
The loss sent shockwaves through the tight-knit park community. Superintendent Brooke Merrell said employees were heartbroken and described Pendery as a respected colleague, friend, and teammate who dedicated herself to helping others in one of the toughest environments on Earth.
The accident occurred near the 14,000-foot camp, a critical location for climbers making their way up and down the mountain. The area serves as a hub for acclimatization, training, and preparation before higher-altitude pushes toward the summit.
Pendery’s death comes during a difficult climbing season on the mountain. Several other fatalities have already been reported this year, underscoring the extreme dangers that remain present even for experienced mountaineers and trained professionals.
Authorities said the incident remains under investigation. For now, colleagues, friends, and family members are left remembering a ranger whose job was centered on keeping others safe in one of America’s most unforgiving wilderness landscapes.
