Toby Cornett, Johnson City, Obituary, Death: Downtown crash turns deadly after car slams into parking lot

The streets of downtown Johnson City turned tragic early Saturday morning after a violent crash claimed the life of 34-year-old Toby Cornett and left three others hurt. What started as a late-night drive ended with flashing emergency lights, twisted wreckage, and grieving loved ones trying to understand how everything went so wrong in just a matter of seconds.

According to investigators, the crash happened around 1:29 a.m. near West Main Street, directly across from the Trek Bicycle Johnson City store. Authorities said the vehicle suddenly lost control before jumping a curb and crashing into a nearby parking lot area. Witnesses nearby reported hearing a loud impact that shattered the quiet overnight atmosphere downtown.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the vehicle slammed into a lamp post and city signage before finally stopping in a group of bushes. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and found several people suffering from injuries inside and around the wrecked vehicle. Toby Cornett was transported from the scene for emergency treatment, but officials later confirmed that he died from his injuries.

Three additional people were injured in the crash. Authorities said the victims included a 22-year-old and two 23-year-olds. Their exact medical conditions have not been publicly released, but investigators confirmed they survived the crash and received treatment following the incident.

Investigators later identified the driver as 36-year-old Steven Kotsonis. After examining evidence from the scene, authorities arrested Kotsonis on several serious charges. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, those charges include vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, DUI, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene involving property damage, and failure to exercise due care.

Officials also confirmed that Kotsonis is currently being held without bond. Investigators added that charges are still pending against one of the passengers who was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Authorities have not yet released additional details about what role that passenger may have played.

The heartbreaking loss of Toby Cornett has now left another Tennessee family mourning a loved one far too soon. Friends and community members continue sharing condolences as the investigation remains active. For many in Johnson City, the deadly crash is another painful reminder of how quickly lives can change on a late-night roadway.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the investigation is ongoing as officials continue reviewing evidence connected to the deadly incident downtown.
