Fort Lauderdale police are investigating the death of a woman found early Wednesday morning near a dumpster at the Alden Apartments on Southwest Second Street. Family members have identified her as Daneshia Heller, and detectives have opened a homicide investigation as they sift through evidence and unanswered questions.
Officers were called to the scene just before 7:30 a.m. after a man discovered the body and dialed 911. When police arrived, they found Heller’s body close to a trash area of the complex, next to North Fork Elementary School. The man who called in the report told reporters the body appeared battered and was partially covered with cardboard boxes.
Investigators cordoned off the scene with bright yellow tape and set up a blue forensic tent near the dumpster. At times, two dozen police vehicles surrounded the complex as detectives photographed the area and collected evidence. Neighbors watched quietly from behind the tape, shaken by the sight of heavy police activity in a usually quiet neighborhood.
A detective at the scene said Heller’s body did not show obvious visible injuries, leaving unanswered what might have caused her death and how long she had been there before discovery. Authorities have not released further details about signs of trauma, time of death, or any suspects.
Police have also not revealed a motive or any leads in the case. Detectives are continuing to interview potential witnesses and review evidence from around the complex in hopes of piecing together the final hours of Heller’s life. Officials stressed the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Relatives and friends have begun to gather details about Heller’s life, remembering her quietly and asking for peace while searching for answers. “We just want to know what happened,” one family member said, struggling with the shock of finding her life ended in such a way.
Authorities are urging anyone with information that could help the investigation to come forward. As the community grapples with the shock of this discovery, police say they are committed to finding the truth about how Daneshia Heller died and holding anyone responsible to account.
