Kyle Matthew Schreckenberg, Columbia: Small-town grief after a life known for quiet kindness

The Columbia community is deeply mourning Kyle Matthew Schreckenberg, a 25-year-old who died on May 21, 2026, surrounded by his family in his final moments. His passing has left friends and relatives in shock, with many still trying to process the sudden absence of someone they say carried calm and warmth everywhere he went.

Kyle was born on May 24, 2000, in St. Louis, Missouri. He grew up with his twin brother Christopher and his brother Kevin. The three were closely tied, sharing a bond that family members describe as steady and unbreakable through every stage of their lives.

Those who knew Kyle often point to his personality before anything else. He was the kind of person who could walk into a room and make it feel lighter. His smile was constant, and his presence was steady. Friends say he had a simple way of making people feel seen.

Outside of family life, Kyle enjoyed traveling and long road trips. He liked trying new restaurants and staying active at the gym. But more than anything, he valued time with people close to him. That was where he felt most at home.

Professionally, Kyle worked as a salesman at Suntrup Hyundai in St. Louis. Colleagues describe him as honest and easy to trust. Customers often returned because of how he treated them, with respect and patience. His work ethic and sincerity stood out in a competitive environment.

Kyle also built a strong academic foundation, graduating from Columbia High School and Southwestern Illinois College. He was known for being loyal and dependable, someone friends could call at any time and expect a real answer, not excuses.

Even in death, his final act reflected how he lived. Kyle gave the gift of organ donation, helping others continue their lives. Family and friends say it was consistent with who he was: someone who thought of others even when facing his own final moments.

He is preceded in death by his uncle, Daniel Schreckenberg. He is survived by his parents, Tad and Ruth Schreckenberg; his brothers Kevin and Christopher; his grandparents; and a wide circle of extended family and friends who are grieving deeply.
