ASHLAND, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Terrence McSally, 64, SUV drift on I-93 triggers fatal collision with box truck at morning commute hour

Terrence McSally, 64, of Ashland, New Hampshire, was killed Monday morning after a violent crash on Interstate 93 that unfolded during the early commute rush. The collision involved a black Chevrolet SUV and a box truck traveling northbound.

The crash happened around 7 a.m. on I-93 North near mile marker 77.2. Traffic was already building as commuters moved through central New Hampshire.

According to investigators, McSally was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse in the left lane when the vehicle drifted onto the rumble strips along the edge of the roadway.

Authorities said he then overcorrected sharply to the right, a move that placed the SUV directly into the path of a box truck in the adjacent lane.

The impact between the two vehicles caused immediate loss of control. The SUV spun out, crossed the roadway, left the highway, and struck a rock in the median.

Emergency response was fast. Several passing drivers stopped to help, including an off-duty firefighter from Concord who began CPR at the scene before paramedics arrived.

McSally was the only person inside the SUV. He was transported to Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the box truck, Matthew Petz, 35, of Plymouth, was not injured in the crash. His vehicle was left stopped in the highway breakdown lane after the collision.

State police closed the left northbound lane for about two hours while they processed the scene and removed the damaged vehicles. Investigators have not yet determined why the SUV left its lane.

The New Hampshire State Police investigation remains open as officials continue to review what led to the fatal sequence of events on the highway that morning.
