It was supposed to be just another standard Tuesday afternoon shift for the staff over at Wilmington Hospital. But things took a dark, terrifying turn around 3:30 p.m. when gunfire suddenly rang out inside the building. What started as a regular workday instantly shattered into a nightmare for the healthcare workers on duty.
When the smoke cleared, two employees had been hit in what police are calling a workplace-related tragedy. One of those workers tragically lost their life right there at the scene from their injuries. The other employee managed to survive the initial chaos but is now trapped in a hospital bed recovering.

Inside the building, the fear was completely real as the facility went into a hard lockdown. Doctors, nurses, and support staff were forced to barricade themselves inside dark rooms and closets. They had to listen to the sound of heavy police boots echoing through the halls during the emergency.
Wilmington Mayor John Carney spoke out later, calling it a truly terrible day for the entire hospital family. He felt deeply for the workers who had to shelter in place while wondering if they would make it out safe. He praised the local officers who ran toward the danger without hesitation to secure the building.
Delaware Governor Matt Meyer also weighed in on the tragedy with some incredibly sobering words. He reminded everyone that nobody is safe from the devastating reach of gun violence in America anymore. He stressed that people shouldn’t have to fear for their lives while working in schools, offices, or healthcare hubs.
While the lockdown has finally been lifted and the building is secure, the healing process is barely starting. The community is wrapping its arms around the surviving visitor and the family of the worker who was taken too soon. A place meant for saving lives is now trying to recover from a moment that tore two apart.
