MUSCATINE, Iowa — A quiet Iowa community is struggling to make sense of a heartbreaking tragedy after authorities say a domestic dispute turned into one of the deadliest incidents the city has seen in years.
Police say 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland fatally shot six people, all believed to be members of his own family, before taking his own life on Monday, June 1. The shootings unfolded across several locations throughout Muscatine, leaving residents shocked and grieving.
The violence first came to light shortly after noon when officers responded to a home on Park Avenue. When emergency crews entered the residence, they found four people suffering from gunshot wounds. All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say McFarland had already left the area before officers arrived. A large search quickly followed as authorities worked to locate him and determine whether additional victims were involved.
A short time later, officers found McFarland on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge. He was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As detectives continued their investigation, they discovered two more victims at separate locations. One adult male was found dead inside a residence on Mill Street, while another adult male was located deceased at a business on Grandview Avenue. Authorities believe both deaths were connected to the same series of shootings.
Investigators say preliminary evidence points to a domestic-related dispute as the motive behind the violence. Officials also confirmed that McFarland had a prior criminal history, although no additional details have been released.
The loss has hit the community especially hard. The Muscatine Community School District confirmed that two district employees and two students were among those killed. Counselors and support teams were immediately arranged to help students, staff, and families cope with the tragedy.
