Bessemer, Ala. — A driver who struck and killed 23‑year‑old Ashanti Rachael Agee on Interstate 459 Thursday stayed at the scene and called 911, a fact police say helps them begin to understand how the tragedy unfolded near Morgan Road at about 5:19 a.m.
Agee, a McCalla resident, was walking on the interstate when the vehicle hit her. Witnesses and responders arrived quickly, but she was pronounced dead at 5:41 a.m. Her loss has left a community struggling to understand how a quiet morning turned into a fatal crash.

Police have been tight‑lipped about what led up to the moment the vehicle struck Ashanti. So far, investigators have not disclosed whether weather, speed, driver distraction, or other conditions were factors. The driver has been cooperating and remained on the scene to speak with officers.
The fact that the driver did not flee is something authorities appreciate in the early stages of the investigation. It gives them a clearer picture to work from as they talk to witnesses and examine the crash site along the busy stretch of highway.
Despite the driver’s cooperation, the reality remains that a young woman is gone. Friends and family describe Agee as someone who lit up rooms, who had plans and a future, and whose absence will be deeply felt.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates reminded people how dangerous it is to be on an interstate on foot. He urged individuals to use sidewalks and paths designed for pedestrians, a warning that comes too late for Ashanti but perhaps in time to save another.
The Bessemer Police Department says the investigation is ongoing and more details will be released as they become available. For now, the focus remains on understanding the full picture of what happened and supporting those left behind.
