Bessemer, Ala. — In the early hours of Thursday morning, Ashanti Rachael Agee, 23, was walking along Interstate 459 near Morgan Road when a vehicle struck her around 5:19 a.m. The impact left the McCalla resident dead at the scene, shaking friends, family and neighbors who knew her as a bright young woman with so much life ahead.
First responders rushed to the spot after the driver called 911 and stayed where the crash happened, but Agee was pronounced dead just after 5:40 a.m. The sudden loss left a quiet highway marked by flashing lights and whispered questions about how a morning walk turned into a tragedy.

Officials from the Bessemer Police Department and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office are still trying to piece together exactly what happened. They have not yet shared what might have contributed to the crash, including whether speed, visibility or other factors played a role.
For many who knew Ashanti, the news hit hard. She was described as warm, friendly and full of dreams. Friends say she loved to laugh, had big plans, and was always ready to help someone in need. Her death has left a hole in the lives of those who loved her.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates used the moment to remind people just how dangerous it is to walk on busy highways like I‑459. He urged everyone to stay on sidewalks and designated paths whenever possible to avoid losing someone they love.
Bessemer Police continue to investigate and say they will share more information when it becomes available. Meanwhile, the community mourns a life cut far too short and holds tight to memories of Ashanti’s bright smile.
No one knows yet how this morning unfolded in those first moments before the crash, but one thing is clear: a young life was lost, and the ripple effects are being felt all across Bessemer.
