Wilson County: Maverick Killed in Crash That Leaves Family Shattered, Father Charged

The quiet stretch of road in rural Wilson County turned tragic in a matter of seconds Monday afternoon, when a 6-year-old boy named Maverick lost his life in a violent head-on crash that has left a family and community grieving.

The collision happened around 3:48 p.m. on Bridgersville Road, just east of Haynes Road near Elm City. Authorities say a 2022 Toyota Corolla suddenly crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into a 2024 Toyota Sequoia. The impact was severe enough to leave both vehicles disabled in the roadway.

Inside the Corolla was 31-year-old Jonathan M. Hardison, along with his two young children seated in the back. What followed was devastating. Maverick, who was not properly restrained, was partially ejected during the crash and died at the scene. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but there was nothing they could do to save him.

His 7-year-old sister, identified as Heidi Hardinson, survived but suffered serious injuries. She, along with their father, was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. Both are expected to recover, though the physical and emotional toll remains heavy.

In the other vehicle, 40-year-old Gina W. Bridgers and two children were fortunate to escape without injury. Their survival stands in stark contrast to the loss unfolding just feet away, underscoring how quickly lives can change on the road.

Investigators later determined that Hardison had crossed left of center, leading to the crash. He now faces multiple charges, including driving while impaired, driving left of center, and failing to properly restrain a child passenger. Officials stressed that proper child restraints could have made a critical difference.

In the days since the crash, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the family. It paints a picture of a young boy remembered for his energy and innocence, now gone too soon. The fundraiser has drawn support from strangers and neighbors alike, each trying to help a family facing unimaginable loss.

The road where Maverick died has since returned to its usual quiet rhythm, but for those who know his name, it will never feel the same again. His story now stands as both a heartbreak and a warning—one that lingers long after the sirens fade.
