The quiet stretch of road in rural Wilson County turned tragic in a matter of seconds Monday afternoon, when a 6-year-old boy named Maverick lost his life in a violent head-on crash that has left a family and community grieving.
The collision happened around 3:48 p.m. on Bridgersville Road, just east of Haynes Road near Elm City. Authorities say a 2022 Toyota Corolla suddenly crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into a 2024 Toyota Sequoia. The impact was severe enough to leave both vehicles disabled in the roadway.
Inside the Corolla was 31-year-old Jonathan M. Hardison, along with his two young children seated in the back. What followed was devastating. Maverick, who was not properly restrained, was partially ejected during the crash and died at the scene. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but there was nothing they could do to save him.
His 7-year-old sister, identified as Heidi Hardinson, survived but suffered serious injuries. She, along with their father, was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. Both are expected to recover, though the physical and emotional toll remains heavy.
