Amarillo Shooting: Ezekiel Almazan Remembered After Apartment Gunfire Kills Teen

The night was supposed to be ordinary. A group of young people moved from one party to another, chasing music and company. But in Amarillo, Texas, that routine ended in sudden violence that left families grieving and a community shaken.

Seventeen-year-old Ezekiel Rudy Almazan was identified as one of two people killed in a shooting early Saturday morning at the Westminster Apartments. Those who knew him say he carried a kind of light that filled a room. In the hours since his death, that memory has become a source of both comfort and pain.

Police say the shooting happened around 1:58 a.m. at the apartment complex on Coulter Street. What began as a gathering of teens and young adults turned chaotic when a separate group showed up. Investigators believe some individuals who had earlier been asked to leave another party followed the crowd to the apartments.

At some point, that group tried to force their way into one of the units. That attempt quickly escalated. According to police, gunfire erupted, and a rifle-style weapon was used. The sound of shots tore through the quiet early morning, sending people running for cover.

When it was over, two people were dead. One victim died at the scene. Almazan was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Several others—between eight and ten—were wounded, leaving a trail of pain that stretched beyond the immediate loss of life.

The identity of the second victim has not yet been released, as authorities continue efforts to notify family members. Meanwhile, investigators are working to piece together exactly what happened and who is responsible for the shooting.

For Almazan’s family, the focus is no longer on the chaos of that night but on the boy they lost. A fundraising page set up to support his mother describes him as “so full of life, love, and light.” Those words now echo as a quiet tribute to a life cut short far too soon.

As the investigation continues, the memory of that early morning lingers. What should have been another weekend night instead became a moment that changed lives forever.
