BALDWIN COUNTY Man Held After Neighbor Killed in Pre‑Dawn Shooting

In Baldwin County early Friday, a neighbor shot and killed a man just before sunrise, leaving a quiet community rattled. Officers were called to Sandy Creek Drive off Highway 98 between Elberta and Foley around 3:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire. When deputies arrived, 40‑year‑old Charles Lee Douglas II was found dead outside his home from multiple gunshot wounds.

Deputies quickly located 45‑year‑old Paul David Maxwell, also from Foley, nearby and took him into custody. Investigators say Maxwell and Douglas had spent time together earlier that night drinking. During questioning Maxwell admitted he had shot Douglas, according to authorities. Maxwell then left the scene and drove a short distance home before calling 911 to report the shooting himself.

Douglas’ death left family and neighbors in shock. Those who knew him describe him as someone who enjoyed life and spent time with friends. The suddenness of the violence has raised questions among community members about what led to the deadly confrontation in the early morning hours.

Maxwell was arrested and charged with murder. He is being held at the Baldwin County Jail with bond set at $200,000. Law enforcement officials continue to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the shooting, seeking clarity for both families affected.

Friends of Douglas say he was a quiet, regular neighbor who would often greet others in the community. They’re struggling to make sense of how a night of socializing ended in such tragedy. The sheriff’s office has said the investigation remains active as they gather more information.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the case to come forward. Neighbors have expressed concern about the incident but also hope that a thorough investigation will bring some answers. In the meantime, the community mourns the loss of Douglas and hopes for justice in the days ahead.

The events have reminded many in Baldwin County of how quickly ordinary moments can turn devastating. With both men known to each other, questions about their relationship and the events leading up to the shooting are now central to the ongoing investigation.
