BALDWIN COUNTY Neighbor’s Death Through Another Lens: A Closer Look at What Happened

Early Friday morning in Baldwin County, a familiar neighborhood on Sandy Creek Drive was the scene of a fatal shooting that left one man dead and another in custody. Around 3:30 a.m., deputies responded to reports of gunfire near Highway 98 and found 40‑year‑old Charles Lee Douglas II suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, 45‑year‑old Paul David Maxwell of Foley, was arrested soon after. Investigators describe Maxwell as an acquaintance and possibly a friend of Douglas. Earlier in the evening the two had been together, drinking and talking, according to law enforcement sources. But the night ended in violence that no one in the neighborhood expected.

Maxwell reportedly admitted to shooting Douglas during interviews with deputies. After the incident he left the scene and drove to his home. Once there, he dialed 911 to report what had happened. That call led law enforcement back to the shooting site and to his arrest.

The sheriff’s office has charged Maxwell with murder, and he is being held on a $200,000 bond at the Baldwin County Jail. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to fully understand the motive and circumstances that turned an evening of socializing into a fatal confrontation.

Residents of the area say they are stunned by the news. Many described Douglas as a cheerful person who was well‑liked in the community. His sudden death has left friends and neighbors grappling with grief and searching for answers.

Some in the community have expressed concern about safety and the need for clearer understanding of what triggers such incidents. The sheriff’s office has indicated that those details will emerge as part of the continuing investigation.

The case highlights the fragile line between ordinary life and sudden violence. With both men known to each other, questions about how and why events escalated are central as residents and authorities look for closure in a case that has deeply affected this small corner of Baldwin County.
