The quiet stretch of NW Mattox Road in Riverside turned tragic Wednesday morning when a high-speed collision claimed the life of 35-year-old Michael Wolcott. What began as a routine drive quickly spiraled into a fatal crash that left a community shaken and a family grieving.
Police say the incident happened around 9:00 a.m., just north of NW 43rd Street. Officers with the Riverside Police Department were first to arrive, responding to reports of a serious crash involving a motorcycle and a commercial truck. The severity of the scene quickly became clear.

Within minutes, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office stepped in to take over the investigation, given the extent of the injuries and the involvement of a large commercial vehicle. By 9:30 a.m., the case was officially under their control.
Investigators say Wolcott was riding a 2024 Kawasaki motorcycle, heading southbound along NW Mattox Road. At some point, he attempted to pass a commercial truck traveling in the same direction. Authorities believe he was moving at a high rate of speed at the time.
That truck, a 2022 International tractor, was being driven by 33-year-old Robert McCormick of Lucas, Iowa. As Wolcott moved to pass, McCormick began making a left turn into a nearby business. The timing proved catastrophic.
The motorcycle slammed into the truck’s front brush guard during the turn. The impact sent Wolcott and his bike continuing down the road before veering off and crashing into a utility pole. The force of the collision left devastating damage in its wake.
Emergency crews rushed Wolcott to a nearby hospital, fighting to save his life. Despite their efforts, he later died from his injuries. McCormick, meanwhile, was not hurt and was released at the scene.
Authorities say speed and improper passing appear to have played a major role in the crash. The investigation is still ongoing, with a full reconstruction underway to piece together every moment leading up to the collision.
