Manotick Shooting Leaves 19-Year-Old Dead, Another Injured After Gunfire Near Bankfield Road

In quiet Manotick, just south of Ottawa, a community was shaken Wednesday afternoon by gunfire that left 19-year-old Majed Al-Ar dead and another man wounded. Around 4:30 p.m., emergency crews rushed to the intersection of Bankfield Road and Prince of Wales Drive after reports of shots fired in the rural-fringe neighborhood.

When paramedics arrived, they found two men with gunshot wounds. Al-Ar was in life-threatening condition and was rushed to hospital, where he later died. The second man was also taken to hospital and is in stable condition as police continue to investigate. Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting, but officials have not yet released their names or said what charges they face.

Neighbors standing on their quiet street tell of an ordinary Wednesday suddenly ripped open by chaos. One person nearby said they heard yelling and rushed outside, only to see people down on the pavement. Within minutes sirens filled the air as multiple police SUVs and ambulances sped up and down the road.

Bankfield Road remained closed late into the night as officers combed the area, searching ditches and talking to witnesses. Residents described the heavy police presence as unlike anything they’d seen in their normally calm corner of town.

Even long-time locals who are used to the occasional accident said seeing a homicide unfold in their neighborhood was deeply unsettling. Many said they first assumed the sirens were headed to a crash, a common occurrence on the rural stretches of road.

Police say there is no known ongoing danger to the public, but they’re urging anyone with information to come forward. As investigators piece together what led to the shooting, neighbors are left grappling with grief and a sense of disbelief that such violence could touch their everyday lives.
