Nashville’s east side woke up Tuesday with heavy hearts after a 76-year-old woman, Naomi Mangrum, died from injuries she suffered when a vehicle hit her Monday afternoon as she crossed Gallatin Pike South in Madison. Mangrum was in a motorized wheelchair and had the walk signal when the crash happened at the busy intersection near East Palestine Avenue.
Police say Mangrum had just started across the crosswalk shortly after the walk light came on when a Honda HR-V driven by 31-year-old Katelyn Rountree of Michigan made a turn and struck her. Witnesses called for help, and first responders rushed Mangrum to TriStar Skyline Medical Center in serious condition. She passed away the next morning, leaving relatives and neighbors reeling from a sudden and senseless loss.

Friends and family describe Mangrum as a woman full of warmth and connection. In conversations with people who knew her, many said she had a gentle spirit and liked simple moments in life. Her family says nothing prepared them for the shock of seeing her life cut short on a routine afternoon walk.
Police arrested Rountree at the scene. Officers said she told them she was focused on her phone’s GPS in the moments before the crash and didn’t see Mangrum in the crosswalk. Rountree was charged with failure to yield the right of way causing serious injury and released on bond.
The stretch of Gallatin Pike where the wreck happened is a well-traveled road in the Nashville area, and drivers and pedestrians alike say they’ve seen near-misses there before. Residents say the tragedy has reignited concern about traffic safety and how quickly drivers react when people are using crosswalks.
Investigators with the Metro Nashville Police Department spent hours Monday night piecing together what happened. A portion of the roadway was closed during the review, and police are still gathering details about the precise sequence of events.
Loved ones gathered in small groups Tuesday to remember Mangrum. Many spoke in quiet tones about her life, her kindness, and the gap her passing has left in the lives of those who knew her. In the midst of grief, her memory has become a reminder of how fragile life can be when ordinary moments turn tragic.
