GROSSE TETE, Louisiana residents are trying to make sense of a sudden loss after a fatal crash on Interstate 10 early Tuesday that claimed the life of 51-year-old Phillip Scott of Albany. The wreck happened just before dawn near the Iberville–West Baton Rouge parish line on the eastbound lanes of the interstate, leaving the usually busy highway closed for hours and the local community in shock.
According to State Police, traffic had come to a stop because of construction work just after 4 a.m. when Scott’s box truck failed to slow and struck the back of a parked 18-wheeler. Investigators say it’s still unclear why Scott didn’t stop in time, and troopers are continuing to sort through the details. Despite wearing his seat belt, Scott suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. A passenger in the truck, also restrained, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.

The crash snarled the morning commute, with eastbound lanes shut between Grosse Tete and Lobdell. Crews worked through the hours that followed to clear wreckage, and all lanes were reopened by around 9 a.m. Drivers who rely on the interstate for daily travel faced lengthy delays, and many motorists said the heavy fog in the area added to the early morning confusion.
For friends and family in Albany, the news has hit hard. Phillip Scott was known locally as someone who cared about his neighbors and took pride in his work. Messages of support began spreading across the community within hours of the crash, with many recalling his easy-going nature and willingness to lend a hand when needed.
Traffic safety advocates say rear-end crashes at slowdowns and construction zones are a persistent threat, especially in poor visibility conditions. In this case, the fog and halted traffic combined to create a dangerous situation that ended tragically for Scott and disrupted travel for countless others.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine contributing factors and whether anything could have prevented the collision. As the community absorbs the loss, tributes to Scott’s life and condolences to his loved ones continue to grow. His passing is a sobering reminder of how quickly a routine trip can turn tragic, and how important awareness and caution are on busy highways.
