Columbia, Missouri — William Riechers Fatally Shot Near Allen and Bryant Streets

A quiet Wednesday afternoon in Columbia, Missouri, turned deadly when a young man was gunned down in a neighborhood not far from the city’s center. Police say 20-year-old William Riechers was found with a gunshot wound shortly before 4 p.m. on March 4, setting off an investigation that has now led to a teenager facing serious criminal charges.

Officers rushed to the area around the intersection of Allen and Bryant streets at about 3:48 p.m. after several reports of gunfire. When police arrived, they found Riechers lying wounded. First responders immediately began emergency medical care right there at the scene, working urgently to save him. Despite their efforts, the young man was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

The scene quickly filled with officers as investigators began securing the area and gathering evidence. Crime scene tape stretched across the street while detectives worked to piece together what had happened in the moments before the shooting. Neighbors watched as police carefully documented the scene, knowing someone’s life had just been lost in their community.

Authorities later confirmed that Riechers was a Columbia resident. His family was notified soon after the tragedy. For those who knew him, the news landed hard. A life barely out of its teenage years had been cut short in the middle of a normal weekday afternoon.

By the following morning, police announced that a suspect had been taken into custody. Nineteen-year-old Damarius Kavanaugh, also from Columbia, was arrested in connection with the deadly shooting.

Investigators say Kavanaugh now faces a long list of charges. Those charges include second-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, and first-degree tampering with physical evidence.

Even with the arrest, police say the case is still active. Detectives are continuing to examine evidence and gather information about the circumstances that led to the gunfire. Authorities are also trying to determine whether anyone else may have been involved.

The Columbia Police Department is urging anyone who might know something about the incident to come forward. Investigators say cooperation from the public could help them fully understand what happened and ensure that justice is served for William Riechers.
