Tucson Park Avenue — Christopher De La Corte Remembered After Fatal SUV Strike

Tucson woke up heavy Monday after news spread that Christopher David De La Corte was gone. He was 34. His life ended in the early hours of the morning on South Park Avenue, a stretch of road many locals know too well.

Police say it happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 3700 block of South Park Avenue, near Ajo Way and Historic U.S. 80. De La Corte was in the northbound median lane when an SUV came through and struck him. The impact changed everything in seconds.

The vehicle was a 2016 Dodge Durango traveling close to the posted speed limit. First responders rushed De La Corte to a nearby hospital. He was fighting for his life, but the injuries were too severe. He later died at the hospital.

Officers say De La Corte was not in a marked or implied crosswalk at the time of the crash. Investigators also found illegal drugs and paraphernalia on him. Police could not say whether impairment played a role in what happened that night.

The driver, a 37-year-old man, stayed at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. A DUI Unit officer determined he was not impaired. No arrest was made, and the investigation is still ongoing.

For those who knew De La Corte, these details do little to ease the pain. Family, friends, and neighbors describe him as someone who mattered, someone whose presence was felt. His death leaves an empty space that cannot be filled.

As Tucson police continue to piece together the moments leading up to the crash, the community is left grieving. On South Park Avenue, traffic keeps moving, but for many, the road will never feel the same again.
