CLINTON — Nicholas Cunningham Dies During Arrest Attempt After Charles Drive Shooting

CLINTON — The quiet tension in Clinton turned heavy on Monday morning when a man wanted in an attempted murder case, Nicholas Cunningham, died during an arrest operation tied to a shooting that injured a local resident on Charles Drive.

The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office said the operation happened around 10:35 a.m. when members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force moved in to arrest Cunningham. He was wanted by the Jackson Police Department in connection with an attempted murder charge linked to the April 2 shooting.

That shooting on Charles Drive left one person injured and set off an active investigation that eventually identified two suspects. Authorities later arrested Corente Anderson on April 24 as part of the same case.

Officials confirmed that Cunningham took his own life as officers attempted to carry out the arrest. They stressed that no shots were fired by the task force and no physical force was used during the encounter.

Law enforcement also made clear that the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office was not directly involved in the arrest operation itself, even though it later confirmed details of the incident.

The situation unfolded quickly and ended before officers could take Cunningham into custody. Authorities have not released further information about what led up to the final moments of the attempt.

Investigators say the case is still active, and they are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding both the original shooting and Cunningham’s death.
