Valley Forge High School in Parma Heights, Ohio, is now at the center of deep sorrow after the death of 18-year-old student Marissa R. Rand. The incident happened on Monday afternoon during school hours, just around dismissal time.
Authorities say the situation unfolded at about 2:10 p.m. on April 20, 2026, when emergency calls reported a shooting inside the school building. Responding officers confirmed it was a single-gunshot incident involving one student.

Marissa R. Rand, an 18-year-old from Parma, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. First responders rushed in quickly and provided emergency care before she was transported to a nearby hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, she later died from her injuries. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner officially confirmed the cause of death as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officials also made clear that there was no ongoing threat to students or staff at any point. The school was secured immediately, and safety procedures were carried out as the situation developed.
Inside the school, confusion and fear spread fast. Some students described being rushed out of classrooms and guided by school officers as the building was evacuated. Emotions ran high as students tried to understand what had just happened.
The school district moved quickly to activate emergency response plans. Students were taken to a reunification site where families were able to pick them up safely, while counselors were made available on the spot.
Valley Forge High School has since been closed for a short period to allow grief support services to be put in place. Mental health teams are working with students and staff affected by the tragedy.
Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing, and they have not released further details. The community continues to mourn a young life lost far too soon, as classmates and loved ones struggle with the reality of what happened inside their school.
