A recovery operation at Palisade Head in Tettegouche State Park, Lake County, has left a Minneapolis family mourning after Seth Pipho was found dead beneath the cliffs of one of Minnesota’s most visited scenic overlooks.
The discovery was made on May 27, 2026, when a park ranger spotted a body on the rocky ground below the cliff line at about 4:55 p.m. The area is known for its towering drops and unstable footing near the edge, attracting both tourists and experienced hikers.

Emergency teams from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and Rescue Squad responded to the call. Crews faced difficult conditions as they navigated steep rock formations and narrow paths to reach the recovery site.
Authorities confirmed the man recovered was Seth Pipho of Minneapolis. His removal from the base of the cliffs required coordinated effort due to the challenging geography of the shoreline below.
The news has deeply affected people who knew him. Friends and relatives are now left grappling with shock while remembering his life and the moments he shared with those close to him.
Officials have not released any findings on what led to the fall or how he ended up at the location. Investigators with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and medical examiners are still working the case.
The incident has also renewed attention on the risks around Palisade Head, a place admired for its sweeping views of Lake Superior but known for dangerous edges and unpredictable footing.
