Port Shuaiba Kuwait: Maj. Jeffrey O’Brien Among U.S. Soldiers Killed in Drone Strike

The quiet port area of Shuaiba in Kuwait turned into a scene of sudden tragedy on March 1 when a drone strike slammed into a U.S. command center, killing several American service members. Among those confirmed dead was Maj. Jeffrey R. O’Brien, a 45-year-old Army Reserve officer from Indianola, Iowa. The Pentagon said the attack involved an unmanned aircraft system that struck the facility without warning.

O’Brien was serving with the 103rd Sustainment Command based in Des Moines. Colleagues described him as a steady officer who had spent years supporting military operations through logistics and planning. His role placed him among the personnel responsible for keeping American forces supplied and operational across the region.

Officials said the strike killed six U.S. soldiers in total. One of the service members believed to be among the dead is Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert M. Marzan, 54, of Sacramento, California. Marzan was also assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command and was present at the site when the drone hit the command center.

Military leaders confirmed that Marzan’s death is still awaiting final confirmation from a medical examiner. However, initial reports from the scene indicate he was among those killed in the explosion that followed the strike.

The attack came just one day after U.S. and Israeli forces launched a joint military campaign against Iran. That escalation has widened tensions across the region and placed American troops on heightened alert. The drone strike in Kuwait is being viewed as part of the broader conflict unfolding between the United States and Iranian-aligned forces.

Back home in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom publicly mourned Marzan’s loss. He said the state stands with the soldier’s family and honored his service as a reflection of the nation’s highest ideals. The governor’s statement echoed similar messages from military leaders and community members in both California and Iowa.

Pentagon officials said investigations into the attack are ongoing. Military analysts are working to determine how the drone penetrated defenses and struck a command facility used by U.S. personnel. For now, the deaths of O’Brien, Marzan, and the other service members stand as a stark reminder of how quickly the widening conflict in the region can turn deadly.
