Albuquerque Downtown Shooting: The city is reeling after the death of Estevan Gomez, a young man whose night out ended in gunfire near 3rd Street and Copper Avenue.
It happened around 4 a.m. on a Saturday morning in downtown Albuquerque. Gomez and a co-worker had just left a nightclub and were trying to find their car. In the confusion, they walked up to the wrong vehicle, thinking it belonged to them.
Police say they tried to open the car door, but it was locked. That moment set off a chain of events that quickly spiraled out of control.
A witness, later identified as Edwin Sanders, believed the two men were attempting to break into the vehicle. The situation escalated when Gomez and his co-worker realized their mistake and started walking away.
They eventually found their real car and tried to leave the area. That is when investigators say Sanders followed them while armed with a handgun.
According to authorities, Sanders demanded money from the men. The encounter turned violent when Gomez attempted to drive off, and shots were fired into the vehicle.
One of the bullets struck the back window and hit Gomez. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, leaving his co-worker shaken but alive.
Police later located Sanders at his home and took him into custody without further incident. He now faces multiple serious charges, including murder and armed robbery.
The loss of Estevan Gomez has left a deep wound in the community. Friends and family remember him as someone who simply made a wrong turn on a night out and never made it home.
