Perry County, Ohio – A quiet rural road in Pike Township turned tragic Monday evening when Larry Dennis, 52, of Zanesville died after his pickup truck veered off Tunnel Hill Road, hit a culvert and slammed into a tree. Dennis was driving westbound near Township Road 487 just before 5 p.m. when the crash happened, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers said. He was rushed by EMS to Genesis Hospital in Somerset with serious injuries but later died there.
Local emergency crews, including the Perry County Sheriff’s Office, New Lexington Fire and EMS and the county engineers, responded quickly to the scene. Dennis’s truck was badly damaged, a clear sign of the violent impact with the roadside embankment and tree. Troopers confirmed no other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Friends and neighbors described Dennis as a familiar face around Zanesville. Many struggle to make sense of a life cut short so suddenly on an ordinary road. Family members, reeling from the loss, spoke of his steady presence in their lives and how hard it will be to fill the void he leaves behind.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash. So far, officials have not released details about speed, weather conditions or whether mechanical failure played a role. State troopers said their investigation is ongoing, and they hope to shed light on what led to Dennis driving off the road.
For residents in this part of Perry County, the news has hit hard. People who travel the narrow country roads know how quickly a drive can turn dangerous, and many expressed sadness that someone they knew ended up in this tragedy. Conversations have turned to road safety and how to prevent similar accidents.
Dennis’s family has asked for privacy as they cope with his death. They shared that his loss has shaken them deeply and that they are grateful for the outpouring of support from their community.
As investigators work to piece together exactly what happened that afternoon, the memory of a Zanesville man lost too soon is now at the center of a small Ohio community’s thoughts.
