Varina District Henrico became the scene of a fatal early morning crash that claimed the life of a 32-year-old Ohio man identified as Layten Perkins.
Authorities say the incident happened shortly after 6:16 a.m. on the 3600 block of New Market Road near New Market Heights Lane. Emergency crews arrived to find a red Mini Cooper and a Chevrolet Express van badly damaged after a head-on impact.

Perkins was the sole occupant of the Mini Cooper. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders who attempted to assess his condition upon arrival.
Inside the van were two adult men. Both suffered severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital. Officials say their injuries are life-threatening, and they remain under close medical care.
Investigators believe the Mini Cooper was moving westbound when it crossed the center line for reasons still not confirmed. It then struck the eastbound van directly in the opposite lane.
Police have stated that alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. However, they are still examining whether speed, distraction, or road conditions may have contributed to the collision.
The roadway remained closed for several hours as crash reconstruction teams worked through the scene, documenting evidence and mapping the final positions of both vehicles.
Henrico Police say the investigation is still active. They are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information to come forward as they work to fully understand what led to the fatal impact.
