Hershey Pennsylvania Dr Wayne Sebastianelli Dies Suddenly at Penn State Health Hospital

Dr Wayne Sebastianelli, a well-known orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine physician with Penn State Health, has died. His passing was first reported on Monday, May 4. Friends and colleagues later confirmed the news on social media. No cause of death has been shared at this time.

He was widely respected across Penn State Health and Penn State Athletics. He worked closely with student-athletes for many years. His role placed him at the center of sports injury care and recovery at the university level.

Dr Sebastianelli served as associate chief medical officer for Penn State Health’s Centre County region. He also held the position of associate dean for clinical affairs at the University Park Regional Campus. He was the Kalenak Professor in Orthopaedics at Penn State College of Medicine.

He graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1983. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency in 1988. He later trained in sports medicine through a fellowship at Hershey Medical Center in 1989. His medical career was built on decades of hands-on care and academic leadership.

In his role as medical director of Penn State Sports Medicine, he helped guide the treatment of injured athletes. He also served as director of athletic medicine for Penn State. He mentored fellows, residents, and medical students who trained under him.

His work extended beyond the clinic. He focused on knee, shoulder, ankle, hand, and ligament injuries. He also studied sports-related brain injury. He coauthored books on concussion in athletics and contributed to more than 85 peer-reviewed medical publications.

Dr Sebastianelli earned national recognition for his work. He was honored as a “Pillar of the Orthopaedic Profession” by the American Orthopaedic Association. Colleagues remember him as steady, disciplined, and deeply committed to athlete care.
