MISHAWAKA, Indiana — A tight‑knit neighborhood on Taylor Street was shaken to its core Saturday afternoon when police found a 10‑year‑old girl suffering from a gunshot wound and pronounced her dead at the scene.
Officers were dispatched around 4:30 p.m. to the 300 block of Taylor Street after someone reported a child had been shot. When they arrived, the young girl, whose name has not been released due to her age, was already critically wounded. Despite emergency responders’ efforts, she did not survive.

By evening, authorities had arrested 17‑year‑old Jacob Olvera in connection with the incident. Olvera, who police say is not related to the girl, is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail facing charges that include possession of a machine gun, dangerous possession of a firearm and felony criminal recklessness. Formal charges are expected soon.
Detectives have stressed that there is no known ongoing threat to neighbors or the broader community. Officers worked through the night interviewing family members and potential witnesses as the investigation continues. Police also scheduled an autopsy for Sunday to help determine precise details about what happened.
Neighbors described a heavy police presence on Taylor Street and a somber calm settling over the block. The loss of a child has left many residents struggling to process the sudden tragedy in what had been a quiet neighborhood. Conversations among neighbors quickly turned from shock to concern, with some offering prayers and others reaching out to family members they didn’t even know.
Friends and classmates of the girl took to social media to share their grief and memories, highlighting her laughter, school activities and the ordinary joys that now weigh heavily in the face of loss. Many expressed disbelief that a day that began like any other could end in such heartbreak.
Local leaders have urged anyone with information to contact the Mishawaka Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit. They reiterated that tips, even anonymous ones, could be vital as the investigation moves forward and families continue to mourn.
In the following days, neighbors brought flowers and small tokens to the block where the shooting occurred, a humble public offering of grief and solidarity in a community trying to make sense of a young life cut short.
