WAVERLY, Fla. – Waverly Road Crash Kills 35‑Year‑Old Biker David Durham

WAVERLY, Fla. – A slow afternoon turned tragic on Waverly Road Saturday when a 35‑year‑old man riding a motorcycle was killed in a crash with an SUV at the intersection of Waverly Road and Hodge Street. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the victim as David Durham, whose life ended far too soon after what authorities believe was a high‑speed approach on his motorcycle at about 2:57 p.m. on Feb. 7, 2026.

Durham was heading west on Waverly Road when a 2015 Toyota Highlander, driven by a woman heading east, began a left turn onto Hodge Street. Deputies say that turn brought the SUV directly into Durham’s path. The rider, believed to be traveling above the posted 35 mph speed limit, couldn’t avoid the collision.

The impact was violent. Durham was thrown roughly 75 feet from the motorcycle and came to rest along the north shoulder of the road. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but he was already unresponsive. A bystander was performing CPR when first responders reached the scene. Durham was rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Police also noted that Durham was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, a factor that likely contributed to the severity of his injuries. The loss of life has shaken friends, family, and neighbors who knew him as a careful rider and part of the local community.

The driver of the Highlander and her two passengers were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. All were wearing seat belts and have since been treated and released. Authorities stressed that their cooperation and safety gear likely prevented more serious outcomes for them.

Sheriff’s traffic homicide investigators remain on the scene piecing together exactly how events unfolded. While speed appears to be a factor, detectives are still sorting through witness statements, vehicle positions, and any other clues from the intersection.

Durham’s death underscores the dangers motorcyclists face on busy roads, especially at intersections. Law enforcement continues to urge both drivers and riders to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and always wear protective gear. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is ongoing and expects to release more information as it becomes available.
