Emergency responders worked quickly at the scene. Mathis was rushed to Spartanburg Medical Center in critical condition, but doctors pronounced him dead at 10:04 p.m.

Investigators said the shooting came after an argument involving Mathis and a 21-year-old man, Joseph Brenden Poole of Greenville. Authorities stated that both men were known to each other before the incident.

According to law enforcement, Poole allegedly left the scene after the shooting. He was later arrested without resistance as the investigation began to unfold.

Poole has been charged with murder and with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was denied bond as the case continues to move through the courts.

Officials confirmed that a forensic examination of Mathis was conducted on May 27. Results are still pending as investigators work to clarify what led to the deadly confrontation.

In Chesnee, grief has spread quickly through the community. Friends and neighbors describe a painful sense of loss and disbelief over how fast the situation turned fatal.

Family members are remembering Mathis with respect and sadness, holding onto memories while trying to process a life that ended far too soon.
