Cowley County, Kan.: John Kanelakos Dies in Rural Watershed After Late-Night Rescue Search

Cowley County, Kansas — A quiet rural stretch east of Silverdale has turned into the center of deep grief after 59-year-old John Kanelakos was found dead following an overnight search in a local watershed.

It all started in the early hours of the morning when a property owner noticed something unusual. A pickup truck was parked nearby with its engine still running, but there was no sign of the driver. That driver was later identified as Kanelakos.

Concern grew quickly. Deputies arrived around 2:45 a.m. and began searching the surrounding land. The area was dark, open, and difficult to move through, making the search slow and tense.

Not far from the vehicle, officers found a pair of boots near the edge of the water. That detail shifted the search toward the watershed, raising fears that Kanelakos may have entered the water.

More teams were called in as the situation escalated. Boats were launched. Search dogs were brought in. Mounted units and dive teams joined the effort, working through the night and into the morning.

Hours passed with no breakthrough. The search continued in coordinated waves, with teams scanning both land and water in silence, hoping for a different outcome.

By around 10:30 a.m., the dive team located Kanelakos’ body in the watershed. Authorities confirmed he was recovered from the water and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say early information suggests he may have entered the water while trying to rescue a calf, though this has not been confirmed. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

Residents in the Silverdale area are now left with shock and sadness, remembering Kanelakos as a man whose final moments may have been driven by instinct to help.

The investigation is still ongoing as officials work to fully understand how a quiet night in rural Kansas ended in tragedy.
