The Champaign County roadway, Interstate 74: A routine shift ends in tragedy for Steven A. Cornett
Steven A. Cornett, a 65-year-old former Chief of Police of the Tilton Police Department, was killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while working on a road construction crew along Interstate 74 in Champaign County.

The crash happened near mile marker 180, where Cornett was part of a crew assigned to an ongoing interstate interchange reconstruction project. Authorities say he was struck during active roadway operations in the early hours of the morning.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Cornett was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:45 a.m. The Champaign County Coroner’s Office confirmed that he suffered fatal blunt force injuries.
The news has shaken both law enforcement circles and the local community, where Cornett was widely known for his long career in public service and steady leadership style.
Cornett served the Tilton Police Department from 1984 until his retirement in 2017. Over the years, he advanced through multiple ranks, eventually becoming Chief of Police in 2010, a position he held until retirement.
Colleagues describe him as a disciplined and steady presence who helped shape the department’s standards. Many younger officers credited him with mentoring and guiding them through the early stages of their careers.
After retiring from law enforcement, Cornett did not fully step away from public service. He continued working in roadway construction, where he remained active at the time of the crash.
Illinois transportation officials expressed condolences and emphasized the persistent dangers faced by workers in active highway zones, urging drivers to remain alert and reduce speed near construction areas.
The Illinois State Police and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash as the community focuses on honoring his life and service.
