West Monroe saw tragedy unfold on I‑20 Thursday morning when two truckers lost their lives in a violent collision that left Interstate 20 closed for hours and a community in shock. The crash came just west of the Well Road exit around 10 a.m. as traffic headed toward Texas.
A blue 2012 Freightliner driven by 46‑year‑old Clinton Warren of Vina, Alabama drifted from the left lane into the path of a white 2013 Freightliner box truck in the right lane. The impact sent both trucks careening into the median and into the concrete supports of the Vancil Road bridge, crushing metal and scattering debris across the highway.

Warren and his passenger, 45‑year‑old Nelson Okuoimose from Laveen, Arizona, were unrestrained and were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second truck was buckled up and suffered only minor injuries, allowing him to walk away from the deadly crash.
Responders from the Louisiana State Police and local emergency crews worked through the wreckage, closing lanes and redirecting traffic. Troopers say there was no sign of impairment, and they collected routine samples to be tested as part of a full investigation.
The human toll of the crash has hit home in both men’s communities. Warren was known for his steady work ethic and kindness behind the wheel, while Okuoimose was remembered as a reliable friend who enjoyed the brotherhood of long‑haul driving.
The wreck has put a fresh spotlight on highway safety, especially the importance of wearing seat belts even in large commercial vehicles. State police reminded drivers that buckling up is a simple step that saves lives, a message underscored by the loss of two lives that morning.
As the investigation continues and families begin to grieve, West Monroe leaders and road safety advocates are urging all drivers and passengers to make safety their first priority on every trip.
