Kansas City is mourning after a 4-year-old boy, Tadens Joseph, was killed in a tragic crash near Maple Park on Monday evening. The incident happened around the 1800 block of East 3rd Terrace, just before 6:30 p.m. on May 4, 2026, while the child was playing in a grassy area near the park.
Police say an Amazon delivery vehicle had just finished dropping off a package in the area and was heading westbound toward Woodland Avenue when the situation unfolded. Investigators report that Tadens moved into the roadway moments before the vehicle reached him. The impact caused severe injuries.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The news sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, where families often gather in the park during the evening hours.
According to authorities, the driver initially stopped after the collision. However, police say the driver left the area before officers arrived on scene. The circumstances surrounding that decision are now part of the ongoing investigation.
A family member reportedly tried to alert the driver immediately after the crash, but police say the driver denied involvement before leaving. Investigators are now reviewing all available accounts and evidence to understand the sequence of events clearly.
By Tuesday afternoon, detectives confirmed that a person of interest had been taken into custody. Officials are working with the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office as they consider possible charges and continue building the case.
Police also stated that a full reconstruction of the scene is underway. They noted that investigations involving pedestrian deaths can take several weeks due to the level of detail required before reaching final conclusions.
Amazon released a statement expressing sympathy for the family and confirmed cooperation with law enforcement throughout the investigation. Company representatives said they are reviewing the incident internally as well.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas also addressed the tragedy, urging drivers to slow down near parks and remain especially alert for children in residential areas. The community continues to grieve as the investigation moves forward.
