Sweet Home, Ore. — A quiet evening drive on Highway 20 turned deadly near milepost 21 in Linn County, leaving 69-year-old Karen Gail Ramirez dead after a violent two-vehicle crash that stunned the Sweet Home community.
The crash happened around 5:44 p.m. on May 2. Investigators say Ramirez was driving a black Kia Forte eastbound when a westbound Jeep Wrangler allegedly crossed into her lane.
Authorities identified the Jeep driver as 30-year-old Mariah Darlene Lopez, also of Sweet Home. Officials say Lopez’s vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic just before the impact.

The collision was severe. Ramirez’s vehicle was struck with enough force to eject her from the Kia Forte. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Loved ones described Ramirez as a steady and familiar presence in the community. The suddenness of her death has left neighbors struggling to understand how a routine drive ended in such loss.
Oregon State Police reported that Lopez had been driving in a reckless manner prior to the crash. She sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being arrested.
After medical clearance, Lopez was booked into the Linn County Jail and charged with second-degree manslaughter. Records show she remained in custody as of May 4 while the case moved forward.
Highway 20 was shut down for about four hours as investigators documented the scene, gathered evidence, and reconstructed the sequence of events. The Lebanon Fire Department and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the crash site.
Officials say the investigation is still active as they continue reviewing witness accounts and physical evidence to determine exactly how the crash unfolded and what led to the fatal crossing into oncoming traffic.
