Fayetteville, North Carolina — A 17-year-old boy now sits in jail charged with murder after police say he fatally stabbed his mother inside their Daphne Circle home Tuesday night. Just after 7 p.m., officers were called to the residence and found 49-year-old Katharine Svaldi unresponsive with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the same address, authorities located and took into custody Svaldi’s son, identified as Isaac Tracy. Police said Tracy was detained at the scene by responding officers and later charged with first-degree murder. Because of the nature of the offense, state law allows him to be tried as an adult.

Details about why the deadly attack happened are sparse. Police have not publicly discussed a possible motive and describe the case as an active investigation. They have said so far there’s no evidence the public is at risk, and that this appears to be an isolated incident between family members.
Neighbors in the usually quiet block near Bingham Drive said they were shocked by the news. Many described Svaldi as a reserved person who kept to her routines and kept to herself. Friends say she was devoted to her home and known around the neighborhood as a steady presence.
As the community reels from the shock, investigators are working to reconstruct the timeline of events. Detectives hope to piece together what happened in the hours leading up to the stabbing and why it unfolded the way it did.
Tracy’s case is expected to move quickly through the legal system because of the seriousness of the charge. First-degree murder in North Carolina carries the most severe penalties possible, and prosecutors have indicated they will pursue the case accordingly.
For now, police continue to gather evidence and speak with those who knew the family. Svaldi’s death has left neighbors searching for answers, grappling with how violence erupted within a home they thought they understood.
As this story develops, more details are likely to emerge about the circumstances that turned an ordinary Tuesday evening into a tragedy for one Fayetteville family.
