Bentsen Palmview Road, Hidalgo County — Ascencion Lopez Hernandez, 75, left home that Thursday morning like he did so many times before, headed down Bentsen Palmview Road in his gold Chevrolet Malibu. By 6:16 a.m., the routine trip turned into a fatal crash that drew a community into mourning.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Lopez tried to pass another vehicle when a northbound car approached. To avoid a head-on collision, he steered hard, lost control, and the sedan veered off the road into a bar ditch where it rolled over. Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene, and a passenger was rushed to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance with injuries that doctors say aren’t life-threatening.

The stretch of road north of San Lucas Street near Palmview is used by locals commuting to work and school. Witnesses described early morning traffic as light but steady, and some said the sun was just breaking on the horizon. Within minutes of the crash, first responders were on site, securing the scene and checking on the injured passenger.
Family members said Lopez was an easygoing man with a deep love for his grandchildren. He was known around Mission for his stories about deep-South Texas history and his warm greetings to neighbors. His sudden death was a shock to those who knew him, underscoring how fragile life can be behind the wheel.
DPS officials continue to piece together how the events unfolded, and whether speed or road conditions played a role. The investigation is ongoing, and troopers are reminding motorists that passing maneuvers at dawn require extra care due to changing light and visibility.
Local residents described a somber mood along the road where Lopez lost his life, saying they hope others will slow down and think twice before attempting risky moves. Families heading to work, school buses rolling by, and daily errands paint a picture of life that hangs in a delicate balance with safety.
Lopez’s loved ones plan to celebrate his life in a private gathering, sharing memories of a man who enjoyed simple pleasures and loved his family fiercely.
