Bentsen Palmview Road Crash Kills Mission Man Ascencion Lopez

A quiet stretch of Bentsen Palmview Road in Hidalgo County became the scene of heartbreak early Thursday when a southbound Chevrolet Malibu flipped into a bar ditch and claimed the life of 75-year-old Ascencion Lopez Hernandez of Mission.

Just after sunrise around 6:16 a.m., Lopez was driving a gold Malibu north of San Lucas Street near Palmview when he tried to pass another vehicle. Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety say he overcorrected to avoid an oncoming car, lost control, and the vehicle skidded off the pavement before rolling into the ditch. The crash left the car mangled and Lopez dead at the scene.

A male passenger survived and was taken to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening. Emergency workers closed the stretch of roadway around the crash site while the investigation continued.

Friends and neighbors described Lopez as a longtime Mission resident who liked tending his yard and watching birds outside his home. The news of his sudden death rippled through the community, leaving family members trying to make sense of a morning that began like any other.

Investigators with DPS are reviewing the sequence of events that led to the rollover, including weather and traffic conditions at the time. Officials reminded drivers that passing on two-lane roads can be risky, especially when traffic is approaching from the opposite direction.

For many who live near Bentsen Palmview Road, the stretch is familiar, but Thursday’s tragedy served as a stark reminder that even short morning drives can turn deadly in a split second. Drivers are urged to stay alert and cautious, especially in low light and early traffic.

Lopez’s family plans a small, private ceremony this weekend to honor his life. They remember him as a gentle soul who cared deeply for his family and community.
